As soon as you can prove your charge, the credit card company will refund you the money.  Under federal law, you are allowed to dispute various items, such as calculation errors, unauthorized charges and charges for faulty products. Keep in mind, your responsibility does not end with reporting the credit bureaus and credit card companies.

You need to send a credit dispute letter to your creditors, so that you can keep a written record of the dispute. If you have already written a credit card settlement letter before, it means you know the basic guideline.  Read ahead, to know the gradual steps to write a credit dispute letter to your creditors.

  • Once you start writing the letter, mention the date and the credit card company’s address right at the top left corner of the credit dispute letter.

  • The subject line should go like this “Charge dispute for (put your credit card account number)”.

  • You must address the creditor respectfully in the credit dispute letter.

  •  Address them as “Sir or Madam” or just write the name of your credit card company.

  • Make sure you clarify the details of the charge you are disputing for. Incorporate the date of the statement, chargeable amount and the retailer name and address into the credit dispute letter.

  • Put in plain words the reasons behind disputing the charge, for instance, you can pen down the details how you never authorized the charge or how you never received the product the retailer committed to deliver. Make sure you enclose a copy of substantial evidence along with the letter in order to support your dispute case. Ask the creditors to go through the attachment.

  • Politely request the credit card company to investigate the charges and eventually to remove the charges from your credit card statement.

  • Sum up the letter with a formal valediction, like “Sincerely” or “Regards.”  At the end of the credit dispute letter, make sure you put your signature, name, address and contact details explicitly.

Keep the aforementioned points in mind, while writing a letter of dispute to a credit card lender.
